Developing Conceptual Articles in Tourism workshop will be offered by:
Sameer Hosany, Ph.D., Professor of Marketing, Royal Holloway, University of London
Date: Wednesday
Time: 3:30 PM – 5:00 PM
Developing high-quality conceptual articles remains one of the most intellectually demanding yet impactful forms of academic contribution. Conceptual work is crucial for advancing theoretical understanding, but it remains underrepresented in tourism research. This gap is partly driven by perceived reviewer bias against non-empirical work and the inherent challenges of developing, framing, and publishing conceptual articles.
In this workshop, we will examine the craft of developing conceptual papers in tourism, drawing on established and emerging guidelines, as well as exemplars from related disciplines. The session explores how conceptual work can synthesise, integrate, and reconfigure existing knowledge to generate novel insights. Importantly, conceptual articles tend to be cited more frequently than empirical ones, underscoring their lasting intellectual impact and influence. Impactful conceptual papers require both deep domain expertise and the creative capacity to “see things anew.” The workshop seeks to encourage tourism researchers to engage more actively in developing conceptual articles and, in doing so, broaden the scope of our thinking that advances the field.
